Olympic 2036 bid: AMC revises TP schemes to allocate separate plots for playgrounds

Ahmedabad: In preparation for a potential bid to host the 2036 Olympics, Ahmedabad is revamping its urban development plans to boost sporting infrastructure. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is updating its town planning (TP) schemes to allocate separate plots exclusively for sports and playgrounds, moving away from the previous practice of combining school and playground plots.

The AMC recently approved draft amendments to TP schemes in areas such as Makarba, Bopal, Ghuma, Kathwada, Nana Chiloda, Gota, Chandlodia, and Vatva. Drafts are also underway for Piplaj, Shela, Bakrol, and Behrampura, with reserved plots ranging from 7,000 to 1 lakh square meters.

Previously, disputes often arose as plots designated for “schools and playgrounds” frequently prioritized schools, leaving playgrounds inaccessible to local children. The new plans prioritize playgrounds, ensuring access for children and allowing for future development of sports facilities.

In TP Scheme 204, covering areas near SG Highway, two plots of 1 lakh sq m each have been designated for sports. Additionally, 1.86 lakh sq m in Nana Chiloda is reserved for similar purposes. DeshGujarat
