NCP MLA Kandhal Jadeja, son of deceased ‘Godmother’ Santokben was arrested today in a case of alleged rioting, assault and threatening a local resident in Porbandar, police said.

“Kandhal Jadeja, NCP MLA from Kutiyana Assembly seat of Porbanadar district was arrested today along with six others in a case of rioting, unlawful assembly and for giving life threat to a local in Kirti Mandir area,” Porbandar Superintendent of Police G M Pandya told PTI.

An offence has also been registered against his two brothers, Karan and Kano in the same case and police is trying to nab them, Pandya said.

The MLA was arrested following a complaint by local resident Nagesh Malde Odedara, son of Porbandar municipality president Dheliben Odedara, that Kandhal along with 12 others vandalised his car and home, beat him up and also threatened him and his family with life late last night, the SP said.

A case under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 114 (abettor of offence), 147 (rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly in prosecution of common object) has been registered.

Besides, sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 427 (mischief causing damage to private property) along with section 135 of Bombay Police Act have also been invoked, police said.

According to the complainant, the MLA assaulted him after a minor car accident involving him and some of Jadeja’s men in Memanwada area, Kirti Mandir’s incharge police inspector Pradyumansinh Vaghela said.

“Jadeja’s men first had a scuffle with Odedara and later went to his house and did the damage, following which he approached police late last night,” Vaghela said.

“We arrested Kandhal from his home today, while two of his brothers are on the run,” he said.

Jadeja was elected from Kutiyana in 2012 on NCP ticket. He had unsuccessfully contested last year’s Lok Sabha election from Porbandar constituency.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ganpat Vasava informed the House that Jadeja has been arrested in the case of rioting and assault.

As per the provisions of Gujarat Police Manual, if a sitting MLA is arrested, the state Assembly and other senior officials will have to be informed about it, Pandya said.
