15% NRI quota in medical colleges only for NRI children/wards, vacant seats for Gujarat students: Assembly passes bill
August 23, 2016
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Assembly today passed an amendment in year 2007 ordinance pertaining to admission and fees in government and self financed medical colleges. The bill in this respect was moved by minister of state(independent charge) for health Shri Shankarbhai Chaudhary.
Recently the Gujarat High Court had in its order said that only genuine NRI(Non Resident Indians)/ NRI proper which means children and wards of NRIs should be given admission on 15% NRI seats in medical colleges, and not NRI dependent or NRI sponsored students.
Chaudhary today said Gujarat government’s motive was only to give more opportunities to Gujarat students and therefore it decided to amend the 2007 ordinance. With this amendment passed only genuine NRIs, their children or wards will be able to get admission on NRI quota seats.
Additionally, if some NRI quota seats are vacant, the management will be able to offer admission to students who have passed 12th Science from Gujarat. This will give more opportunities to Gujarat students.
With more Gujarat students getting admission in medical and para medical courses, more doctors will be available in Gujarat in future.
Gujarat government has also taken a decision to allow self finance colleges to decide fee structure for each annual batch of students.
