Streetlights to be switched off in Gandhinagar for 3 hours to mark Poonam today
May 16, 2022
Gandhinagar district administration has decided to organise a ‘Moonlight’ programme on the full moon night of May 16, as part of which all street lights in Gandhinagar will be switched off between 9 PM and 12 AM once the Moon starts shining in its full glory.
This programme had been last organised in May 2017. The ‘Moonlight programme’ started off as an experiment under then chief minister and now prime minister, Narendra Modi, in 2014 with the aim to conserve energy.
Full moon nights are sufficiently bright, which allows authorities to turn off the street lights and save energy, while giving people an opportunity to spend some time in the lap of Mother Nature.
Significant amount of energy saving is expected because people will also turn off the lights in their homes when they go to witness the cultural activities organised under the open sky as part of the ‘Moonlight’ programme.
