Gujarat govt to open 100 more ‘meal for Rs 5’ centres for labourers
December 11, 2024
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Tuesday announced that it will soon establish 100 additional meal distribution centres under the Shramik Annapurna Yojana. Currently, 290 centres are operational across 19 districts, providing meals to labourers at a nominal cost of Rs 5.
According to an official statement, over 75.7 lakh meals have been distributed to labour families at Rs 5 each since April 2024. To further support construction workers, the state government plans to expand the scheme with 100 new centres. The government subsidizes Rs 37 per meal to enable this low-cost provision.
Labour and Employment Minister Balvantsinh Rajput emphasized that providing affordable, nutritious meals to labourers and their families is a priority, particularly as many migrate to cities for work and gather at specific points to seek jobs. Currently, an average of 32,000 meals are distributed daily across the state. Since the scheme’s inception, more than 2.93 crore meals have been served at a cost exceeding Rs 150 crore. DeshGujarat
