IMD Issues Nowcast Warning for Heavy Rains in 9 Districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad, July 27, 2025 – 10:30 AM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nowcast alert warning of heavy to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across various districts of Gujarat over the next three hours, starting from 10:00 AM today.

According to the bulletin, heavy rain exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by light thunderstorms and surface wind gusts reaching up to 40 kmph, is very likely at isolated locations in the following districts:

  • Surendranagar
  • Banaskantha
  • Patan
  • Mehsana
  • Ahmedabad
  • Gandhinagar
  • Sabarkantha
  • Aravalli
  • Kheda

These areas also face a moderate probability (30-60%) of cloud-to-ground lightning, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain indoors and avoid open fields and tall structures during thunderstorm activity.

In addition, moderate rainfall (5–15 mm/hr) accompanied by light thunderstorms is expected at isolated spots in a broader region including:

  • Kachchh, Morbi, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Botad, Anand, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Mahisagar, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dangs, Navsari, Valsad
  • Union Territories of Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli

The likelihood of lightning in these areas remains low (less than 30%).

Further south and west, light rain (<5 mm/hr) is expected in:

  • Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, and Diu

The IMD advises residents, especially in the high-alert districts, to take necessary precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with local weather bulletins. Farmers, in particular, are urged to protect crops and avoid working in open fields during thunderstorm warnings.

Disaster response teams and local administrations have been alerted to remain on standby in case of any emergency arising due to lightning or flooding in low-lying areas.
