AMC Activates Heat Action Plan as Temperature Crosses 41°C in Ahmedabad; IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Ahmedabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heat in Ahmedabad and released the temperature forecast for the next seven days. According to the IMD, temperatures in the city are expected to remain high, with heatwave-like conditions likely till March 12.

As per the forecast, the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad is expected to remain between 39°C and 41°C from March 12 to March 18, 2026, while the minimum temperature is likely to stay between 22°C and 24°C.

On March 12, the maximum temperature may reach around 41°C, creating heatwave-like conditions. In the following days, the temperature is expected to remain between 39°C and 40°C, with continued heat across the city.

Meanwhile, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated precautionary measures under its Heat Action Plan to protect citizens from extreme weather conditions.

AMC Heat Action Plan – Key Measures

  • ORS is available at all Urban Health Centres, Community Health Centres, and Health & Wellness Centres.

  • More than 350 water stations have been set up across the city with the help of social organisations and NGOs, and efforts are ongoing to increase the number.

  • ORS packets have been distributed to all Anganwadi centres.

  • Special ORS counters and separate beds for heatstroke patients have been arranged at Ahmedabad Municipal General Hospital.

  • Drinking water facilities have been provided at all AMTS depots, while ORS and drinking water are available at all BRTS bus stands.

  • Teachers in municipal schools have been sensitised about heat safety, and water breaks every one and a half hours have been introduced.

  • During the summer season, work at sites under the Engineering Department will remain closed from 1 pm to 4 pm, except in unavoidable circumstances.

  • All public parks will remain open from 6 am to 11 pm, with drinking water facilities available.

  • ORS packets and drinking water have also been arranged at all shelter homes.

Traffic and Transit Relief Measures

To protect commuters from the peak afternoon heat, 70 traffic signals across the city will remain closed from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. For the 24 major intersections where signals must remain active due to high traffic volume, CREDAI and other social organisations are installing green nets to provide shade without obstructing CCTV cameras.

AMC Advisory for Citizens

The AMC has appealed to citizens to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Dos

  • Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty.

  • Wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothes.

  • Use sunglasses, umbrellas, hats, or cloth coverings while going out.

  • Consume lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water, or ORS to maintain hydration.

Don’ts

  • Avoid going out between 12 noon and 4 pm unless necessary.

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity in extreme heat.

  • Avoid excessive tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, as they may cause dehydration.

  • Avoid stale food or heavy, high-protein meals.

  • Avoid taking children, pregnant women, and elderly persons out in extreme heat.
