Gujarat Swelters Under Intense Heat; Ahmedabad and Rajkot Near 42°C Mark
April 19, 2026
Ahmedabad: Large parts of Gujarat continued to reel under intense heat, with several cities recording maximum temperatures above 40°C, according to the latest report issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Rajkot emerged as the hottest location in the state, registering a maximum temperature of 41.9°C, which is 2.5°C above normal. Close behind were Ahmedabad at 41.8°C (+1.2°C), Amreli at 41.7°C (+1.4°C), and Gandhinagar at 41.2°C (+1.0°C), indicating widespread heatwave-like conditions across interior regions.
Other major cities also recorded elevated temperatures, with Vadodara touching 40.8°C (+1.5°C) and Deesa 40.5°C (+1.6°C). Coastal areas remained relatively cooler, though still above normal in some places. Bhuj recorded 39.7°C (+1.1°C), while Bhavnagar and Surat both registered 39.2°C, with Surat showing a sharper deviation of +2.7°C from normal.
In contrast, coastal stations such as Dwarka (30.6°C) and Veraval (32.8°C) reported comparatively lower maximum temperatures due to maritime influence, though humidity levels remained high.
The IMD data indicates that most regions in Gujarat are experiencing above-normal daytime temperatures, accompanied by low evening relative humidity in several cities, particularly Ahmedabad (18%) and Gandhinagar (16%), which can intensify discomfort.
With temperatures expected to remain high, authorities have advised residents to take precautions against heat exposure, especially during peak afternoon hours. DeshGujarat
