AMC Prepares Storm Water Drainage Master Plan for Ambli, Bopal, Ghuma and Shela

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has prepared a zone-wise Storm Water Drainage Master Plan for the Ambli-Bopal-Ghuma-Shela area to address recurring waterlogging, following directions from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha MP and Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.

The move comes after severe waterlogging was reported in the area following around 18 inches of rain in Ahmedabad earlier this monsoon season. Shah wrote to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the AMC Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner, recommending a permanent and planned solution to the problem.

Following his directions, the AMC conducted a hydrological survey of the entire area and prepared the storm water drainage master plan. The plan focuses on creating a new drainage network in areas where none exists, addressing identified waterlogging spots and laying necessary storm water lines, interconnections and outfalls for the faster discharge of rainwater.

The plan also takes into account the area’s rapid urbanisation and proposes long-term drainage solutions along the Gota-Godhavi Canal and the Sabarmati River.

The Ambli-Bopal-Ghuma-Shela belt was incorporated into the AMC in 2021. The area’s geographical conditions and the absence of an adequate storm water drainage network have contributed to waterlogging during periods of heavy rainfall. DeshGujarat
