First heavy downpour of Monsoon in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: First heavy downpour of this monsoon season in Ahmedabad, which recorded 124 mm (around 5 inches) of rains from late last night till early this morning, has thrown life out of gear in many areas of this commercial capital of Gujarat even as 183 talukas of all the 33 districts have received some amount of rains in the last 24 hours.

Khambalia in Devbhoomi Dwarka witnessed the maximum 229 mm or around 9 inches of rain. Lalpur taluka of Jamnagar has recorded 203 mm where the vavadi dam has overflown and owing to erosion of soil road traffic on Porbandar highway has also been affected. Sarsai dam of Jamnagar district has also overflown. Alerts have been issued in the low lying areas in and around Dhadhar.

Meanwhile owing to incessant overnight rains in Ahmedabad city many areas have seen severe water logging. The District Education Superintendent has declared leave in several government run schools, mostly in Eastern parts of the city where Khokhra, Maninagar, Hatkeshwar, Narol, Saraspur and many other areas are facing water logging. Many areas of Western, New-Western, Southern and Northern zones of the city had also faced water logging but it has now receded. Many people were facing hardship as water has even entered several societies. At least two of the underpasses Akhbarnagar and Parimal got water filled owing to heavy rain.

After the rains the water level of Vasna dam on river Sabarmati has seen a surge in its water level. It had reached 129 meter after which 6 sluice gates were opened up to 3 ft to release the excess water.

Meanwhile in a rain related incident a portion of the boundary wall of Arvind mills in Gomtipur area of the city fell down last night. Though there was no loss of life in the accident, over half a dozen auto-rickshaws parked near reportedly it got damaged.

The one night downpour has catapulted Ahmedabad’s monsoon rain average to 36.53%. The district average has reached 26.01%. Despite heavy rains in the city the district on an average received only 25 mm rains. The only other area in the district which received mentionable rain was Dholka (40mm).

Apart from the very heavy downpour in parts of Jamnagar and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts during the last 24 hours Porbander, Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Patan, Gandhinagar, Tapi, Valsad, Navsari, Dangs also received medium to heavy rains. Even notorious rain scanty areas like Lakhpat, Abdasa, Rapar have also seen downpour of 1 to 2 inches. The state average has reached 42.69% even as the met office has predicted heavy rains in Saurashtra and Kutch region in the next 24 hours.
