With over 460 deaths on straight roads, Ahmedabad among top 5 in accident fatalities
September 02, 2025
Ahmedabad: The largest city of Gujarat emerged among India’s most dangerous for road travel, particularly on straight stretches, as it recorded 462 deaths on such roads. Ahmedabad came at number 4 after the national capital Delhi (938), Bengaluru (793), and Jaipur (718).
Of the 535 total road accident deaths in the city, 86% occurred on straight roads. Officials attribute this to overspeeding, as the city has fewer blind curves and more long, open stretches that lead to overspeeding. SG Highway, lined with bridges, contributed significantly to the toll.
Accidents on bridges formed the second major category, with 77 crashes claiming 41 lives (7% of the total). The report further notes that 21 deaths occurred on signal-controlled roads, 32 on police-managed roads, and 205 on uncontrolled stretches.
On the other hand, the city ranked fifth nationwide for uncontrolled road fatalities, behind Mumbai (336), Indore (258), Delhi (241), and Bengaluru (241). DeshGujarat
