Double accidents at ISKCON flyover on SG Highway; Nine dead

Update at 6:00 pm: Accused Tathya Patel has been taken to the police station from the hospital. He was in the hospital getting treatment after being attacked by the locals last night following the accident.

Update at 5.00 pm: Youths namely Aryan Panchal, Shyan Sadar, Dhvani Panchal, Shreya, and Malavika along with the main accused Tathya Patel’s father Pragnesh Patel are detained and taken to Sattelite Police station. Tathya has been detained in the private hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The youths were in the car with Tatyha when the accident happened. They had left the accident spot unhurt.  The youths were hiding their faces when media cameras tried to capture them.

Ahmedabad: In a terrible case of accident, 9 persons are dead on the city’s accident prone SG highway late in the night. DCP of city police Nita Desai confirmed the figure of death. She added that 11 persons are injured in this incident.

According to the details shared by Police, a Mahindra Thar vehicle hit the back side of a dumper truck on ISKCON flyover of SG highway late in the night. A large number of people gathered at the accident site to view it.

Soon an even more serious incident occurred when a speeding Jaguar car rammed into the crowd and hit those gathered to see the accident site, killing half a dozen or more people and injuring even more. The accused who was driving a Jaguar car has been identified as Tathya Patel. The police role is under scanner as it allowed Tathya Patel to leave the place and get admitted in a private hospital. DCP Nita Desai in her talk with the media person stated that Tathya was not drunk, however, the car was very over-speeding. She said doctors of a private-run hospital have asked Police to question Tathya Patel only after twenty-four hours if doctors allow that. Desai said it’s yet to be probed who was with Tathya Patel in the car when he rammed the car into the crowd, because a report suggests that one girl and one boy were with Tathya in the car when the accident took place. A video is also viral in which the Jaguar car can be seen with dark glasses which is illegal. A Thar vehicle involved in first accident had no RTO number plate as per a viral video. Desai said the accused is not arrested for now as he is under treatment and doctors have advised against that. When asked why Tathya Patel was allowed to escape the place, police said the priority of police was to offer treatment and send those injured to hospital.

It is reported that Tathya Patel’s father Pragnesh Patel who is a builder is accused in a gang rape case. A complaint was registered in Ahmedabad that five persons of Ahmedabad city had gang-raped a Rajkot-based girl by asking her to give her a job in a corporate company. The girl was taken to Mount Abu and from there to Udaipur, where she was gang-raped by mixing a cold drink with alcohol and making her unconscious as per the police complaint. The rape was committed by threatening her to capture her video and make it viral. The girl lodged a complaint against Prgnesh Patel alias Pragnesh Gota, Jitendrapuri Goswami, Maldev Bharwad, Jaymin Patel, and Neelam Patel (Pragnesh’s wife). A case was registered at Mahila West Police Station on November 3, 2020. The investigation was then handed over to the Crime Branch. Pargnesh Patel had also gone to jail in a land-grabbing case.

Pragnesh Patel, when interviewed today stated that last night his wife received a phone call that Tathya had faced a car accident. Patel says he and his wife rushed to the accident site where the people gathered were beating up Tathya because of which he was bleeding and injured. Pragnesh Patel says he took Tathya to a private hospital and informed Sattelite police regarding the same. Pragnesh Patel said Tathya was with a group of his friends and he is ready to share the names of those friends to the Police. Pragnesh Patel claimed his son never consume any intoxicant and he is a teetotaler. Pragnesh Patel claimed that as per Tathya’s friends, the car was not even above 100-speed when it rammed into the crowd. When asked by a reporter based on what the eye-witnesses stated, whether he had shown a gun to the crowd and threatened them to hand over Tathya, Pragnesh Patel denied it. Pragnesh said there were three girls in the car along with two other male friends.

 

9 deaths are confirmed along with injuries to over 10 persons in this incident. The dead bodies were taken to Sola-based civil hospital late in the night. Some of those injured are also taken to Asarwa-based civil hospitals. A person who was in the driving seat in Jaguar car has been taken to a private run CIMS hospital.

As per the prima facie details available, those dead include the persons from Botad identified as Akshay, Ronak and Kruanl, the persons from Surendranagar namely Aman and Arman, a Police constable Dharmendra Singh and a person from Chandlodiya area of Ahmedabad namely Nirav.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel took to Twitter to express his condolences about the incident and said that the accident that happened last night on ISKCON Bridge in Ahmedabad is very sad. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. I am praying to God for the speedy recovery of the injured. The state government will provide Rs. 4 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

Minister of States for Home, Harsh Sanghavi through a tweet informed that “The state government has announced Rs. 4 lakh to the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to all those injured. The government is committed to take strict action against the culprits.”

State Health minister Rushikesh Patel visited Sola Civil hospital to meet the relatives of those died in the accident. The relatives were here to take over the dead bodies after postmortem. Rushikesh Patel said strict actions will be taken against the culprits in this case.

Meanwhile video footage of the accident has surfaced online. A biker who was driving in opposite lane of ISKCON flyover had captured this footage. The Jaguar car can be seen speedily passing over the flyover and ramming into those gathered there.

SG Highway traffic police 02 has filed two FIRs in last night’s double accident case.

The first FIR has been filed by a policeman Balbhadrasinh against Hardik Melaji Thakor, resident of Sarkhej who was driving Mahindra Thar vehicle. Hardik was held on the spot by Police after his Mahindra Thar rammed into a truck on ISKCON bridge of SG Highway. Thakor is booked under IPC sections 279, 427, 177, 184 and 181. The incident of crime is shown between 12.30 am to 1.00 am.

According to the complaint, at 2.55 am, police was informed that a Thar vehicle number GJ01WL 4746 was on ISKCON bridge on Karnavati club to Rajpath club road and there was a crowd of people. Hardik Melaji Thakor (16) was present there. He was driving this vehicle when it rammed into a dumper from back side. Mahindra Thar is registered in the name of Melaji Thakor and its RTO registration was done in April this year.
