Ahmedabad: The city police on Thursday filed a 1684-page chargesheet against 19-year-old Tathya Patel and his father, Pragnesh, in connection with the SG Highway accident case that left 9 people dead. The chargesheet was filed in a magisterial court at Mirzapur.
“It is learned during the investigation that Tathya is a habitual offender,” stated in-charge police commissioner Premveer Singh. After his arrest in the SG Highway accident case, Tahya is also booked in two other cases of rash driving.
The investigation will still continue under the provisions of Section 173(8) of the CrPC,” informed Inspector S J Modi, the investigator in this case, to the court. The extensive chargesheet includes statements from 191 witnesses. Four girls who were in the Jaguar involved in the accident are also witnesses in the case. Eight of the witnesses have had their statements recorded by a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.

Pravin Trivedi, the special prosecutor in this case, stated that the chargesheet also contains 15 pieces of documentary evidence, including 25 panchnamas. After the probe, IPC Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) has been added to the chargesheet in addition to the charges initially invoked against the father-son duo in the FIR. This includes IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (endangering other person’s life), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation), 504 (insult to provoke breach of peace), and 279 (rash driving).
Following the announcement by MoS Home, Harsh Sanghavi, that the police will gather evidence and submit the investigation report within a week, it is likely the first instance in which the city police have filed a chargesheet for a serious offence in such a short time. DeshGujarat
