Key road to Narendra Modi Stadium to be widened to 61 metres for sports enclave project

Ahmedabad: Infrastructure projects in the city are being fast-tracked as Ahmedabad prepares for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and a possible bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. As part of the plan, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved widening the road from Sabarmati Toll Plaza to Narendra Modi Stadium to improve access to the proposed Sardar Patel Sports Enclave.

The existing 18.3-metre-wide road will be widened to 61 metres over a stretch of about 500 metres. The project will require acquisition of more than ten government and private land parcels, including land belonging to ONGC. A 24.4-metre road passing between ONGC plots will also be widened to 30 metres, as per the approved proposal.

Officials said the road widening was part of the 2014 development plan and has now received final approval. Affected landowners will be compensated through FSI, TDR, or jantri-based payment, and alternative arrangements will be made where required.

The road expansion is linked to the proposed 650-acre Sardar Patel Sports Enclave near the stadium. The project will be developed in two phases at an estimated cost of ₹5,050 crore, with completion targeted by December 2028.

The first phase includes an aquatics centre (₹2,250 crore), while the second phase will include an indoor arena, tennis centre, National Institute of Sports Excellence, and athlete housing, costing about ₹2,800 crore. DeshGujarat
