Hindu organisations seek probe into Special Marriage Registrar office in Ahmedabad
March 13, 2026
Ahmedabad: A controversy has surrounded the Special Marriage Registrar office in Gheekanta after Hindu organisations alleged irregularities in marriage registrations. This comes after a Hindu woman and a Muslim man attempted to register their marriage while allegedly disguised in professional legal attire, after which complaints were submitted to authorities seeking an inquiry into the functioning of the registrar’s office and suspension of the registrar.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and several social organisations have written to the Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Justice, and the Ahmedabad Collector demanding suspension of the registrar and a probe into all marriage registrations carried out at the office. They have sought an inquiry by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and legal action if any violations are found.
In a representation, VHP leader Dharmendra Bhavani alleged that on March 3, 2026, Chief Registrar M.M. Sayed misused his authority by registering a marriage before official working hours at the Gheekanta office. According to the complaint, the office normally opens at 11 am, but the registrar was present around 9 am when the registration was allegedly carried out.
The complaint also stated that some lawyers present at the premises objected to the procedure, leading to a dispute. It further alleged that similar irregularities may have occurred in the past and demanded verification of previous records.
The organisations also claimed that a person identified as Wasim was present in the office during the process and suspected that some documents related to the registration may have been removed or destroyed. They have sought an inquiry into his role and presence in the government office.
Apart from the VHP, organisations including Vishwa Umiya Foundation, Khodaldham, Sardar Patel Group (SPG), Adtalis Kadwa Patidar Samaj, Ter Gam Leuva Patel Samaj, Shri Bavisi Sampraday Modh Chaturvedi Brahmin Samaj, and Kelavani Mandal have also written to the Collector seeking action.
The groups have demanded immediate suspension of the registrar, formation of an SIT to examine all registrations handled by him, and strict legal action if misuse of power is established. No official response has been issued so far. DeshGujarat
