July 23, 2026
Valsad: National Highway 48 (NH-48), one of the busiest highways connecting Ahmedabad and Mumbai via Surat, has been hit by severe traffic congestion after torrential rain in South Gujarat submerged several stretches of the highway. The downpour, which brought nearly 36 inches of rain to parts of Valsad district in just 24 hours, has brought traffic to a near standstill, leaving thousands of commuters stranded for hours.
According to real-time Google Maps traffic data, multiple stretches of NH-48 are waterlogged after Surat. Heavy congestion has been reported near Dungri and Chikhli, while traffic has come to a halt for several hours near Vapi and Karambeli in Valsad district due to flooding on the highway.
The worst-affected stretches are near Pardi, Motivada and Udvada, where large portions of the highway remain submerged. Authorities have reportedly closed one side of the highway at several locations, resulting in long traffic queues. Live traffic data shows major delays and road closures along the stretch between Valsad and the Maharashtra border, with several commuters reporting a complete standstill and being stuck for hours.

The situation in South Gujarat has turned critical after unprecedented rainfall over the past two days. In the 24 hours ending at 6 am on Thursday, Umbergaon in Valsad district recorded nearly 36 inches of rain, while Pardi, through which NH-48 passes, received more than 17 inches. The heavy rainfall has inundated several roads and disrupted transport across the region. According to official data, 376 roads have been closed due to flooding.
With several towns and villages submerged and residential areas resembling rivers, Valsad MP Dhaval Patel has said that airlift rescue operations may be considered if the situation worsens further. Emergency services remain on high alert as rainfall continues, making efforts to restore traffic movement and connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra increasingly challenging. DeshGujarat
