Delhi – Mumbai Expressway Connecting Surat to Navsari Closed as Ambika River Swells

Surat: The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (NE-4) stretch connecting Ena in Surat district with Navsari has been temporarily closed after the Ambika River swelled to flood level following incessant heavy rainfall across South Gujarat. The closure has been ordered as a precautionary measure after rising river waters approached the bridge on the expressway. Authorities have barricaded the affected stretch and diverted traffic to ensure the safety of commuters.

Surat Rural Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya said that water in the Ambika River has almost reached the bridge on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway due to continuous heavy rainfall. “Traffic has been diverted from the cut near Palsana. Vehicles coming from Ahmedabad towards Navsari will have to exit at the Palsana cut, proceed to the Palsana roundabout, and continue towards Navsari through the alternate route,” he said.

He further said that waterlogging has also affected parts of National Highway 48 between Navsari and Valsad, and appealed to people to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. “People should refrain from stepping out except in emergencies. Those living near rivers or in low-lying areas should stay indoors and remain alert,” Gadhiya said.

According to the police, the worst-affected talukas include Olpad, Umarpada, Palsana, Mahuva, and areas along the Ambika River. River levels have risen significantly due to heavy upstream rainfall, with the Kim, Mindhola, Purna, and Ambika rivers flowing at high levels.

The local administration has already shifted residents from waterlogged areas such as Anaval, Bardoli, and Olpad to safer locations and has made necessary arrangements for their accommodation.

Authorities have once again urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel and cooperate with the administration until the flood situation improves. DeshGujarat
