Double-engine trial runs of Karnavati and Shatabdi Express trains may commence soon
June 23, 2019
By staff writer, Mumbai: Western Railway will soon run double-engine trials on its top-class trains Karnavati Express and Shatabdi Express that operate between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in attempt to increase the speed of these trains to 110 km/hour.
Indian Railways had done similar trial runs of Mumbai – Delhi Rajdhani Express which that had been successful. According to a report, link of which has been tweeted by Western Railway, the Railway Board has given its consent to Western Railway for double-engine trial run of Karnavati Express and Shatabdi Express.
The technique of operating trains using double-engine is in technical language called ‘push-pull technique’. It reduces the time needed for acceleration and de acceleration (pick-up and break) of train. While one locomotive is attached at the front side of the train, the other is attached at rear. The technique is applied only in trains that have LHB coaches.
Shatabdi Express leaves Mumbai at 6.25 am and reaches Ahmedabad at 12.45 pm. If trial runs earns desired success, the train will reach Ahmedabad at 12.15 pm. Similarly, the Karnavati Express leaves Mumbai at 1.40 pm and reaches Ahmedabad at 9.25 pm. If trial runs are successful, it will reach Ahmedabad at 9 pm. Thus the success of push-pull technique will reduce about half an hour in total journey time.
