April 19, 2024
Gandhinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed his nomination papers from the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha Constituency at the District Collector’s office today. Shah filed the nomination at 12:39 PM during Vijay Muhurat.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, MoS Home Harsh Sanghavi, and other senior leaders were also present during the process at the District Collector’s office. Before filing the nomination, Shah met with CM Patel, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Senior BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, and other party leaders at the Circuit House.
Today marks the last day for filing nomination papers on all 26 Lok Sabha seats of Gujarat, which will go to polls on May 7th in the third phase of General Elections 2024.
The Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, which came into existence in 1967, has been a stronghold for the BJP since 1989. It has been represented by notable figures including one Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and two Union Home Ministers, Lal Krishna Advani and Amit Shah.
In the 1989 election, former BJP leader Shankersinh Vaghela emerged victorious. Subsequently, L. K. Advani secured the seat in 1991. Atal Bihari Vajpayee claimed victory in 1996 but opted to resign in order to represent Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. This decision led to a by-election, won by Vijay Patel, who defeated film actor Rajesh Khanna, contesting on a Congress ticket. From 1998 onwards, Advani held the seat until 2014. In 2019, Home Minister Amit Shah clinched victory with a significant margin of over 5 lakh votes. DeshGujarat
