Ahmedabad: As Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport gears up for a major expansion, a large-scale tree transplantation drive has begun on the ground. Over 200 trees have been identified for relocation as part of the proposed New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) project.

The first phase, targeted for completion by 2029 ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, is currently in the preparatory stage, with pruning and conditioning work underway.

Around 200 trees near the old cargo complex are being trimmed and will later be shifted using scientific methods to a site near Terminal 2, with the exact location being finalised.

Officials said the transplantation is being carried out systematically to ensure maximum survival of the trees. The relocated trees will be moved to a designated area behind the Terminal 2 parking facility, with necessary approvals in place from the civic authorities.

Pre-transplant work includes pruning, canopy reduction, and root conditioning to minimise stress and help the trees adapt.

Meanwhile, groundwork for the new terminal has begun as part of the airport’s long-term expansion plan, with approvals also being sought to shift the existing ATC tower. DeshGujarat
