GU professor gets show-cause notice for embezzlement

Ahmedabad: A financial scam of around Rs. 15 crore has come to light after an internal investigation by Gujarat University. In light of this, the university has issued a show-cause notice to Professor Kanwaljit Lakhtaria, who has been suspended since last year, demanding a response within 10 days. The scam allegedly took place during his tenure as the coordinator of the Course on Computer Concepts (CCC) exams.

It is learned that Lakhtaria manipulated CCC exam results for monetary gain, allowing candidates to pass even if they had failed. Furthermore, the inquiry committee found that Lakhtaria engaged in corrupt practices during his time as coordinator of the university’s higher payment mode private courses department.

“The issue will be discussed in the next board of management meeting,” stated GU VC Neerja Gupta.

In December of last year, the GU vice-chancellor appointed three retired judges to single-member committees to conduct a judicial inquiry into allegations against three suspended teachers, including Professor Lakhtaria. Additionally, the executive council ordered the formation of an internal inquiry committee to investigate the financial irregularities attributed to Lakhtaria. DeshGujarat
