Gujarat govt gives police station status to State Monitoring Cell

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government today announced that the State Monitoring Cell (SMC), functioning at Police Bhavan, has been given the status of a separate police station.

The new SMC police station will have jurisdiction across Gujarat and will register and investigate crimes such as cricket betting, dabba trading, drug trafficking, prohibition violations, and gambling, both within and outside the state. These crimes will be investigated by a team from the State Monitoring Cell under the direct guidance of the State Police Chief, Vikas Sahay.

It is worth noting that the ATS was also declared a police station by the state government in 2002. Now, the SMC will be able to take active action against organized crime in Gujarat, as well as across the country, similar to the ATS, and will operate effectively.

The State Monitoring Cell police station will be exempted from the sanction of local police stations and district-range heads, which will expedite the investigation process, enabling strict action to be taken against criminals.

Off-state crimes affecting Gujarat, such as cricket betting, dabba trading, drug trafficking, prohibition violations, and gambling, committed within this police station’s jurisdiction, can be investigated autonomously.

The State Monitoring Cell will receive direct guidance from the State Police Chief, Vikas Sahay, and investigations will be conducted confidentially.

This decision will help curb organized crime in Gujarat and make the state more secure. No expenditure has been incurred for the establishment of this police station, which has now been made operational where the cell is functioning, the government added further. DeshGujarat
