Polling underway for local body elections in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Gujarat is witnessing voting for local self-governance bodies today. Voters are heading to the polls for the general elections of Junagadh Municipal Corporation, 66 municipalities, and the taluka panchayats of Kathlal, Kapadvanj, and Gandhinagar.

In addition to this, mid-term elections are being conducted for the Botad and Wankaner municipalities, while by-elections are underway for three municipal corporation seats, 21 municipality seats, nine district panchayat seats, and 91 taluka panchayat seats. The results of these polls will be announced on Tuesday, February 18th, after the votes are counted.

The 66 municipalities where elections are taking place are Bavla, Sanand, Dhandhuka, Mansa, Mahemdavad, Dakor, Chaklasi, Mahudha, Kheda, Anklav, Boriyavi, Od, Lunadava, Santrampur, Balashinor, Khedbrahma, Prantij, Talod, Harij, Chanasma, Radhanpur, Kheralu, Vadnagar, Karjan, Chhota Udepur, Zalod, Devgadh Bariya, Kalol, Halol, Bilimora, Valsad, Pardi, Dharampur, Songadh, Jamjodhpur, Dhrol, Kalavad, Salaya, Dwarka, Bhanvad, Bantwa, Manavadar, Mangrol, Visavdar, Vanthali, Chorwad, Kodinar, Rapar, Bhachau, Lathi, Jafrabad, Rajula, Chalala, Shihor, Gariyadhar, Talaja, Gadhada, Jasdan, Jetpur-Navagadh, Dhoraj, Bhayavadar, Upleta, Halvad, Thangadh, Kutiyana, and Ranavav.

Vacant municipal corporation seats where the voting for the by-elections are going to take place are Ward No. 07 in Ahmedabad, Ward No. 03 in Bhavnagar, and Ward No. 18 in Surat.

It is noteworthy that out of the 2,178 seats across all the local bodies going to polls, the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has won 215 seats unopposed after the candidates of the Congress party withdrew their nominations.

BJP won a total of 196 municipal seats across municipalities unopposed before polling, and in the 60-seat Junagadh Municipal Corporation, the party won 9 seats unopposed after Congress candidates withdrew from the race. DeshGujarat
