Indian Railways approves ₹166.5 crore four-lane Road Over Bridge at Alkapuri in Vadodara

Vadodara: Indian Railways has approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara Division of Western Railway at a total cost of ₹166.5 crore, on a cost-sharing basis with the Gujarat government.

The project cost will be shared equally between Indian Railways and the state government. Both sides will contribute approximately ₹83.2769 crore each.

Four-lane ROB to augment road connectivity

The existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB), near Vadodara Railway Station, serves as an important east-west road link between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas of the city. However, the RUB has a vertical clearance of only about 3 metres, restricting the movement of larger vehicles and causing recurring waterlogging during the monsoon.

These limitations have contributed to traffic congestion and inconvenience for road users. The proposed four-lane grade-separated facility is aimed at improving the capacity and functionality of the existing road crossing.

Improved connectivity to key transport facilities

The ROB will provide an improved crossing facility without disrupting railway operations. It will also strengthen connectivity to Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station.

Designed to meet growing traffic demand

According to the traffic assessment, the stretch records peak-hour traffic of more than 1,600 passenger car units (PCUs) per hour, along with multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities.

The existing RUB has therefore become inadequate to meet the area’s current and projected traffic requirements.

The proposed four-lane ROB is expected to address the functional limitations of the existing RUB, improve traffic movement and strengthen road connectivity in this important part of Vadodara. DeshGujarat
