Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday inaugurated 255 healthcare facilities and laid the foundation stones for 45 new projects worth over ₹500 crore across the state. The key project includes a ₹223-crore Institute of Neuroscience and Research Centre at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
The new neuroscience centre will be developed over 58,831 square metres with a capacity of 521 beds, including 160 ICU beds, and 13 advanced operation theatres. It will offer specialised treatment for stroke, brain tumours, spinal disorders, neurological injuries and other complex conditions, along with rehabilitation and research facilities.
Addressing the event, Patel said Gujarat’s healthcare sector had undergone significant transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, with a focus on disease prevention, health promotion and affordable treatment. He said the Ayushman Bharat scheme provides eligible beneficiaries with cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹10 lakh, adding that more than 2.87 crore Ayushman cards had been issued in the state.
Highlighting the expansion of medical education, the Chief Minister said Gujarat’s medical colleges had increased from eight in 2001-02 to 43 in 2025-26, while MBBS seats had risen from 1,375 to 7,525.
Patel also referred to the operational AIIMS in Rajkot and the proposed development of new medicities at Vasai and Kamrej at an estimated cost of around ₹3,000 crore. He said efforts were also underway to expand cardiology and neurology services in Gandhinagar and Surat.
Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said the 255 newly developed healthcare facilities, built at a cost of ₹185 crore, were being dedicated to the public, while foundation stones were laid for 45 projects estimated to cost ₹347 crore. He said the new neuroscience centre would strengthen specialised treatment facilities for patients from Gujarat and neighbouring states.
Pansheriya added that a dedicated spine hospital was also planned within the same campus. He praised the contribution of doctors, healthcare workers and ASHA workers, and highlighted the state’s efforts in tuberculosis elimination, malaria control and reducing maternal and child mortality.
The event was attended by Minister of State for Urban Development Darshanaben Vaghela, Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, public representatives and senior officials from the state Health and Family Welfare Department. DeshGujarat
