Rising rivers in Vadodara district trigger severe waterlogging in low-lying areas

Vadodara: The Vadodara district has experienced a stormy spell over the past two days, with heavy rainfall in the upper regions causing widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas, including Vaghodiya and Dabhoi. Flooding in homes has resulted in significant property damage, while the Orsang, Dhadar, Dev, Hiran, and Tamsi rivers have overflowed their banks, prompting alerts for villages along the riverbanks.

In Dabhoi taluka, Araniya and Ashgol villages have been cut off due to the overflowing waters of the Hiran River. Water flowing over the causeway connecting Araniya has disrupted access to the village, while heavy flow along both banks of the river has affected Ashgol as well.

In Vaghodiya, localities such as Gugaliapura and Jalaram Nagar witnessed water entering homes, damaging household items. Roads in Dheeraj Chowkdi and Jai Ambe Char Rasta were waterlogged, disrupting traffic. Continuous rainfall in upstream areas has worsened waterlogging in low-lying zones. Near Chanothiya village, the Tamsi River overflowed, submerging a bridge and blocking the road from Chanothiya to Dabhoi.

In Dabhoi, the Dev and Dhadar rivers swelled considerably following the release of 12,700 cusecs of water from the Dev Dam. The Dhadar River flooded the main route to Vaghodiya, affecting villages including Dangiwada, Prayagpura, and Bamboj, and causing extensive damage to crops. Key routes in Dangiwada and Maganpura were submerged, cutting off connectivity to around seven to eight villages.

The Mahisagar River has also overflowed on both sides after water was released from the Kadana Dam, leading to Singhrot village being submerged, with several areas of the village under water. The Mahisagar Mata Temple has also been submerged due to the intense flooding. Several houses in the village are inundated under water, along with the farms. Water was released from the river last night, causing flooding in areas along the riverbanks.

With the heavy discharge of water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam, the water level of the Narmada River has risen, submerging 92 out of 108 steps at Malhar Rao Ghat. Villages along the river, including Chanvada, Karnet, Old Mangrol, Sitpur, Ordi, Rajpura, and Gumanpura, have been put on alert. District authorities have issued precautionary measures due to rising river levels.

In Shinor, the Narmada River has also seen a significant rise in water levels. The elevated water levels have submerged 75 steps of the famous Bhandadeshwar Mahadev Temple.

The state’s weather department has issued a red alert for Chhota Udepur, Panchmahal, Vadodara, and Narmada districts, while Mahisagar, Anand, Bharuch, Dahod, Surat, Tapi, Navsari, and Dang districts are expected to receive very heavy rainfall. DeshGujarat
