Ahmedabad: Over 2,270 metric tons of debris was cleared from Chandola Lake land on Thursday using 100 trucks and 14 JCB machines, as part of a three-day anti-encroachment drive by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The civic body is also working to deepen the lake to enhance water storage capacity, with 62 cubic metres of soil excavated on Thursday alone. The removed soil will be handed over to the garden department, while demolition debris will be sent to the C&D waste plant for making products such as paver blocks.
The second phase of the demolition drive targeting illegal encroachments on the water body was launched with police support on Tuesday. During this phase, over 8,500 unauthorized permanent and temporary structures were razed, clearing around 2.5 lakh square metres of land. On Wednesday, 20 religious structures and 500 temporary encroachments were also removed.
Earlier, from April 29 to May 1, a three-day demolition drive saw the AMC and city police clear illegal constructions from lake land, clearing over 1.5 lakh square metres of land. DeshGujarat
