November 06, 2025
Ahmedabad: In yet another case of a pet dog attacking neighbors, two children were bitten by a German Shepherd at Sharanam Elegance, an apartment building in the New Maninagar area of Ramol. Today, Ramol Police booked the dog’s owner for negligent conduct, endangering human life. Additionally, the German Shepherd has been caught and taken to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s dog shelter to prevent further incidents.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a woman was walking her dog in the building’s parking area. At that time, a six-year-old boy, unaware of the dog nearby, ran toward the compound. The dog suddenly lunged at him and bit him, leaving teeth marks and a deep wound on his thigh. Meanwhile, another child from the same society was also bitten on his right hand, while the first child suffered injuries to his right thigh.
Both injured children were rushed to a nearby private hospital for immediate treatment. The entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras. Following the incident, the father of one of the injured children approached Ramol Police Station, alleging that the woman, identified as Sangeetaben Vaniyar, was walking the dog negligently, endangering the safety of others.
In the FIR, the father of the victim, Nitesh Gundela, said, “On 05/11/2025, at around 1:15 PM, Papaben alias Sangeetaben Palaniswami, residing at E/202, Sharanam Elegance, brought her pet German Shepherd dog to the parking lot below our flat. She did not restrain the dog in a manner that would prevent danger to human life.” Due to her negligence, the dog bit Nitesh’s son Ayan on the right thigh and another child from the same society, Priyansh, on the right-hand fingers, the FIR stated.
Now, the police have booked Sangeetaben under Sections 291 and 425(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 291 addresses negligent conduct with respect to animals, holding individuals liable for failing to take reasonable measures to prevent their animals from causing probable danger to human life or grievous hurt. The punishment may include imprisonment up to six months, a fine up to ₹5,000, or both.
Additionally, BNS Section 125(a) penalizes rash or negligent acts that endanger human life or personal safety. The punishment varies based on the harm caused, ranging from imprisonment up to three months for endangering safety, up to six months if hurt is caused, and up to three years if grievous hurt is caused.
