Thaltej to have Cricket Ground with Pavilion, Viewers sitting and Lighting system

Ahmedabad: As Ahmedabad prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the city’s final budget for 2026-27 outlines a transformation into a global “Sports City”. Central to this localized development is the proposal for a dedicated cricket ground in the Thaltej ward.

The Thaltej Cricket Initiative

The Standing Committee of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has specifically allocated Rs. 2.00 crore for the development of a modern cricket ground in TP 301 of the Thaltej ward, located in the North-West Zone. This project aims to provide professional-grade infrastructure for local youth and residents. The facility is planned to include:

• Professional cricket practice pitch and high-quality pavilion.

• Advanced lighting systems for extended playability.

• Seating arrangements designed to accommodate spectators, fostering a competitive local sports culture.

Beyond just a playing field, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to make sports accessible at the ward level, ensuring that the city’s growth into a sporting hub benefits every neighborhood.

Preparing for the 2030 Commonwealth Games

To ensure the city is ready for its international debut as a host, the budget includes a significant Rs. 100.00 crore provision for a Commonwealth Readiness Cell. A major milestone in this journey is the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, which has been developed as an international-standard facility to host global events. Additionally, the AMC is launching the AMC Sport Volunteer Program with an allocation of Rs. 10.00 crore to build a community of sports enthusiasts and coordinators.

Tech-Infused and Futuristic Sports Infrastructure

The 2026-27 budget earmarks Rs. 211.88 crore for the development of 6 major sports complexes and 5 mini sports complexes. These facilities are set to be among the most advanced in India, featuring:

• AR-Enabled E-Sports Zones: Including E-sports arenas and AR-enabled gaming cafes.

• Simulation Experience Centers: Utilizing virtual reality (VR) to provide immersive training and entertainment.

• VR Amusement Parks: Integrating fitness with futuristic technology.

Community-Level Sports and Wellness Initiatives

The AMC is also focusing on grassroots wellness and inclusivity through several specialized provisions:

• Mini Sports Complexes and Playgrounds: Specific projects are planned for TP 12 in India Colony, TP 117 in Vastral, and the Sabarmati ward.

• Yoga and Fitness in Gardens: The budget proposes establishing Yoga Centers with coaching corners in 100 city gardens, alongside a new garden in TP 106, Vastral.

• Women’s Gymnasiums: A dedicated provision of Rs. 5.00 crore has been made to establish a Women’s Gymnasium in every zone of the city.

• Under-Bridge Sports Hubs: In an innovative use of urban space, Rs. 25.00 crore is allocated to develop sports facilities in the under-space of 11 bridges, including the Makarba (LC-24), AEC, and Swami Vivekananda bridges.

Summary of Key Sports Allocations

To support this “Sports City” vision, the final budget includes:

• Gymnasiums: Rs. 57.98 crore for 5 new facilities.

• Swimming Pools: Rs. 46.98 crore for 3 new pools.

• Playgrounds: Rs. 4.00 crore for 35 new playgrounds across various wards.

Through these initiatives, Ahmedabad is not only building stadiums but is also cultivating a comprehensive fitness culture and active public spaces for every citizen. DeshGujarat
