Anjali Rupani Returns from London After Airplane Crash Claims Life of Former CM Vijay Rupani

Ahmedabad: Anjali Rupani, wife of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, arrived in Ahmedabad from London on Friday morning following the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171, which claimed the life of her husband. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi received her at the airport and extended his condolences.

Vijay Rupani, who was serving as the BJP’s Punjab in-charge, was aboard the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 aircraft that crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The Air India flight, bound for London Gatwick, was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Tragically, 241 lives were lost in the accident, with only one passenger — a British national of Indian origin — surviving the crash.

Vijay Rupani was traveling to London on the ill-fated flight to reunite with his wife, Anjali, and their daughter, Radhika, who currently reside in the UK. Anjali Rupani was seen inconsolable upon landing in Ahmedabad, grieving the tragic demise of her husband.

However, the body of Vijay Rupani has not yet been formally identified. To assist in the identification process, his sister provided a DNA sample at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening. Official confirmation of Rupani’s death will be announced after the test results are available.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the crash site in Ahmedabad on Friday morning, also reportedly met with Anjali Rupani at the airport and expressed his personal condolences. After the meeting, PM Modi returned to New Delhi.

Following her arrival, Anjali Rupani went to the family residence in Gandhinagar. Several political leaders and close associates gathered at the late Vijay Rupani’s bungalow to offer their support, including ministers Mulubhai Bera, Kunwarji Bavaliya, Kuber Dindor, Bhanuben Babariya, and Rajya Sabha MP Mayank Nayak. Many BJP leaders and family members continue to arrive at the residence to pay their respects.

The tragic Air India plane crash has sent shockwaves through Gujarat’s political circles and across the country, with condolences pouring in for the respected BJP leader who served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021. DeshGujarat
