Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: Godhra – Vadodara Section Cuts Travel Time to 45 Minutes, Say Commuters

Vadodara: In a significant boost to regional connectivity, the Godhra–Vadodara stretch of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway has been opened to traffic on a trial basis from April 13, 2026. This newly operational section, developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, is already drawing praise from commuters for drastically reducing travel time.

Rapid Commute and Key Features

The 8-lane, access-controlled expressway is designed for high-speed travel, with a sanctioned speed limit of 120 km/h. While the new route spans approximately 81 kilometers, slightly longer than the traditional highway, the superior road quality enables commuters to travel between Godhra and Vadodara in just 45 minutes.

Notably, the earlier route, which includes the Halol–Godhra road, is around 78 kilometers long but takes over two hours to cover between the two cities, according to Google Maps data. This indicates a significant reduction in travel time due to the expressway.

Commuters have taken to social media to share their experiences, noting that the “driving pleasure” and time savings far outweigh the marginal increase in distance.

One commuter, Avinash Kansar, said he travelled from Godhra to Vadodara in just 45 minutes via the expressway. He also praised the road quality and pointed out that no toll is currently being charged, as the stretch has been opened on a trial basis.

However, some users cautioned that while the highway journey is fast, reaching the city center from the exit points may still take additional time due to local traffic.

Route and Connectivity

The expressway stretch begins at Bhamaiya village near Godhra and extends to Dodka village near Vadodara. Key navigation points for travellers include:

  • Entry Point: Access is available via the Godhra interchange near Daruniya village.
  • Kalol Interchange: Located near Baletiya, this interchange allows commuters to exit toward Kalol via State Highway 75.
  • Intermediate Access: According to commuters, a cut near Sevalia provides local connectivity along the route.
  • Exit Point: Travellers heading toward Vadodara can exit at the NE-1 interchange near Dodka. Vehicles coming from Godhra should take the left exit here to enter Vadodara City.
  • Expressway Integration: The route connects directly to the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway (NE-1). Commuters must keep left and take the designated exit toward Vadodara to join NE-1, enabling seamless onward travel to Ahmedabad.
  • Travel Toward South Gujarat: With this section now operational, Godhra in Central Gujarat is seamlessly connected to South Gujarat. Those who do not exit toward Vadodara or Ahmedabad can continue onward toward Bharuch, Surat, and further up to Navsari.

Safety and Regulations

To maintain high-speed travel standards and ensure safety, two-wheelers and slow-moving vehicles have been prohibited from using the expressway. Officials have stated that the formal inauguration will take place only after the successful completion of the trial phase.

It is also noteworthy that despite the expressway being operational, it has not yet been fully reflected as functional on the Google Maps traffic application.

Economic and Regional Impact

This stretch forms a key component of the larger Delhi–Mumbai Expressway project, which aims to reduce travel time between India’s national capital and financial capital to approximately 12 hours.

At the regional level, the Godhra–Vadodara corridor is expected to:

  • Ease congestion on existing highways
  • Facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers
  • Boost economic growth by improving access to industrial hubs and strengthening trade and logistics across Gujarat
