Rajkot, 15 June 2013
This is a true example of democracy. Rajkot’s new Mayor Rakshaben Boliya is wife of a rickshaw driver. Rakshaben who was elected new Mayor yesterday is Councillor for last two and half years. Her husband Raghubhai owns and drives a rickshaw.
After becoming Mayor for two and half years, Rakshaben will move to Mayor bungalow, while Raghubhai will park his rickshaw in its compound and go to work. While Rakshaben will travel in a car with beacon light, Raghubhai will drive rickshaw. Rakshaben is going to take charge as Mayor on Monday.
Speaking to media persons, Raghubhai said that he has been associated with the BJP for last over two decades, but he has never visited any party leader to pass some file. He said he is not involved in any such practice, and therefore the new post his wife has been given will not make much difference to his life. He said he is satisfied with whatever he earns through rickshaw and he is happy that he can sleep well at the end of the day.
The party had initially offered ticket to Raghubhai, but his denial made way for Rakshaben’s candidature. Present two and half years term of Mayor in Rajkot is reserved for woman Councillors. Rakshaben was selected and asked by the party to contest for the post of Mayor.
