Gujarat’s foodgrains off-take stood at 55.58 lakh ton

Parimal-Nathwani In last three years and the current year the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution allocated 19.27 crore ton foodgrains (rice and wheat) under Targeted Public Distribution System (TDPS), of which various states lifted 16.90 crore ton.

The central government allocated total 79.20 lakh ton foodgrains to Gujarat, of which the state lifted 55.58 lakh ton under TPDS in last four years since 2011-12.

Mr. Raosaheb Patil Danve, minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution stated this detail in Rajya Sabha on February 27, 2015 in reply to the question raised by member of Rajya Sabha Mr. Parimal Nathwani.

The minister in his reply stated that total 10.23 crore ton rice and 8.74 crore ton wheat were allocated under TPDS, of which various states lifted 9.48 crore ton rice and 7.42 crore ton wheat in last four years since 2011-12.

As against allocation of total 14.86 lakh ton rice and 64.34 lakh ton wheat under TPDS, the Gujarat’s off-take remained at 13.58 lakh ton rice and 41.98 lakh ton wheat which is 92.46% and 65.27% respectively.

The minister stated that under welfare scheme the central government allocated total 1.11 crore ton rice and 0.82 crore ton wheat, of which the states’ off-took 0.90 crore rice and 0.63 crore ton wheat under Welfare scheme including Mid-day Meal Scheme, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls and Annapurna Scheme.

According to the statement tabled in the house, against allocation of 1.73 lakh ton rice and 4.00 lakh ton wheat under Welfare scheme, Gujarat’s off-take has been at 1.67 lakh ton rice and 4.00 lakh ton wheat taking the off-take percentage to 69.53% and 100% respectively.

The minister also stated that unlifted quantity of foodgrains by the states/UTs remains the part of the Central Pool. He also stated that the government has implemented end-to-end computerization of TPDS operations, door-step delivery of foodgrains, correct identification of beneficiaries, improve foodgrains offtake, monitoring and vigilance, improving viability of fair shop operations etc for ensuring proper utilization of food grains.
