PM Modi Marks 75 Years of Somnath Temple Consecration, Slams ‘Appeasement Politics’ and Commemorates Pokhran Tests
May 11, 2026
Prabhas Patan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a massive gathering at the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the historic consecration (Pran Pratishtha) of the Somnath Temple. Framing the temple’s restoration as a symbol of India’s resilience, the Prime Minister stated that while the country gained physical independence in 1947, the 1951 consecration of Somnath truly declared India’s independent consciousness to the world.
A Legacy of Resilience vs. ‘Appeasement Politics’
Reflecting on the temple’s turbulent history, PM Modi noted that despite repeated destruction by foreign invaders and looters like Mahmud Ghaznavi and Alauddin Khalji, the temple repeatedly rose again. He attributed this to India’s indestructible ideological strength and praised historical figures like Raja Bhoj, Bhimdev I, Kumarpal, and Ahilyabai Holkar for their roles in the temple’s continuous rebirth.
Bringing the historical narrative into the modern political context, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and K.M. Munshi for spearheading the temple’s post-independence reconstruction. However, he pointedly remarked that these leaders faced immense opposition from the then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Taking a sharp dig at current opposition forces, PM Modi warned that “forces are still effective today who find appeasement more important than national self-respect”. He drew a direct parallel to the present day, noting how similar political opposition was mounted against the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. He urged the nation to abandon such “narrow politics” and embrace a dual path of “Vikas” (development) and “Virasat” (heritage).
Linking ‘Shiv-Shakti’ to Scientific Milestones
The Prime Minister highlighted the historical significance of the date, May 11, which marks the anniversary of the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests conducted under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He recalled how the Vajpayee government withstood massive global pressure and economic sanctions, proving that India’s political willpower could not be bowed.
Noting that the nuclear tests were codenamed ‘Operation Shakti’, PM Modi drew a spiritual connection, stating that the worship of Shiva and Shakti has long inspired India’s scientific progress. He reminded the audience that this synergy continues today, pointing out that the landing site of India’s successful Chandrayaan mission was aptly named ‘Shiv Shakti Point’.
Cultural Revival as an Economic Engine
Speaking as the Chairman of the Somnath Trust, PM Modi highlighted the massive infrastructural and spiritual revival taking place across India’s sacred sites over the past decade. He cited the expansive developments at Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Ujjain’s Mahakal Mahalok, and Kedarnath Dham as prime examples of this cultural renaissance.
The Prime Minister emphasized that ignoring these cultural centers was previously a major hurdle to the nation’s progress, as these sites are not just spiritual hubs but vital engines of economic growth. He noted that the Somnath temple complex alone directly supports hundreds of families and drives the local economy by attracting visitors from around the globe.
Commemorative Releases
To honor the 75th-anniversary milestone, the event also featured the unveiling of special memorabilia. A special commemorative postage stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department to carry the message of Somnath’s glorious history to future generations. Additionally, the Government of India Mint released a special ₹75 commemorative coin crafted from 40 grams of pure silver to immortalize the temple’s divine cultural legacy.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today witnessed a breathtaking flypast by the Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team on the auspicious occasion of the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav.
