Gandhinagar: IndiGrid and AmpereHour Energy on Monday announced the commissioning of a 180 MW/360 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation substation in Gujarat.
According to a press release, the project, for which Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited serves as the off-taker, is the largest standalone utility-scale battery energy storage installation in India and ranks among Asia’s largest BESS facilities.
The newly commissioned installation is designed to store excess renewable power generated during low-demand periods and release it during peak consumption hours, helping strengthen grid reliability and minimise renewable energy wastage.
The companies stated that Gujarat has brought online nearly 870 MW of battery storage projects in recent years as part of its push to expand renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure.
AmpereHour Energy noted that the Gujarat project was developed by leveraging operational insights gained from its earlier 40 MWh battery storage initiative in Delhi and scaling them up for the significantly larger 360 MWh system.
The company also said its engineering and research teams conducted extensive simulation studies across the power infrastructure chain — from the 220 kV grid interface to DC systems to enhance round-trip efficiency and maximise usable energy output.
“The project marks a significant milestone for India’s energy storage sector and demonstrates the scalability of battery storage infrastructure,” said Rahul Shelke, Co-Founder and Managing Director, AmpereHour Energy.
“The successful commissioning of this 180 MW/360 MWh BESS project was a proud moment for IndiGrid and marks an important milestone for India’s evolving energy infrastructure,” said Harsh Shah, Managing Director, IndiGrid. DeshGujarat
