February 12, 2022
Surat: Athwalines police detained the supporters and cadres of Owaisi led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party over a social media post in which a call of rally was given in support of Hijab/Burqa, in reference to a college level controversy in Southern Indian state Karnataka.
Two posts had gone viral on social media today, among which one post had given call for a rally in Surat and asked the cadres to gather at Mahatma Gandhi statue. Another post had claimed that the earlier post was a rumor. Athwalines police held AIMIM Surat women’s wing chief Nazma Khan and party’s Surat city unit president Vasim Qureshi.
AIMIM Ahmedabad unit had given a call for signature campaign on Saturday. The venue of the protest was declared as Astodiya Darwaja. However, the police detained AIMIM city unit chief Shamshad Pathan in his home before the beginning of the protest programme. Police have also held the leaders of the minority wing of congress.
