Gujarat Sees Shift Towards ₹15 Lakh+ Sum Insured as Rising Healthcare Awareness Drives Demand: TATA AIG
April 30, 2026
Ahmedabad: TATA AIG General Insurance Company has observed a significant shift in health insurance buying patterns in Gujarat, with customers increasingly opting for a higher sum insured of ₹15 lakh and above as compared to previous years. This trend reflects growing awareness around the need for stronger financial protection and rising healthcare costs, a press statement said.
As per the press release, “Over the past three years, TATA AIG has also witnessed a notable increase in the share of customers below 35 years. This growth has been supported by early entry discounts and product offerings designed to cater to younger demographics/lifestages, encouraging earlier adoption of health insurance. Customer preferences in the state are evolving, with a clear inclination towards customisable products that offer flexibility while focusing on essential features. This highlights a practical approach among customers, who seek value-driven solutions tailored to their specific needs rather than overly complex coverage options.”
Dr. Santosh Puri, Head – Retail Health Underwriting, TATA AIG General Insurance, said, “We are seeing a clear shift in Gujarat towards customers opting for higher sum insured and more thoughtful health insurance choices. Customers are increasingly prioritising adequate coverage and flexibility, while also entering the insurance ecosystem at a younger age. These trends reflect a more informed and proactive approach to financial protection, and we remain focused on offering solutions that align with these evolving needs.”
As per the insurance company, Gujarat accounts for approximately 6–8% of TATA AIG’s overall health insurance portfolio in India, underscoring its importance as a key market. From a claims perspective, over the years Gujarat presents distinct trends, with infectious diseases such as dengue, fever, acute gastroenteritis (AGE), and typhoid contributing to nearly 18% to 20% higher claims incidence compared to the rest of India, the company added.
The region remains predominantly driven by agency-led distribution, reflecting a strong dependence on advisor-led decision-making. The company has built a robust presence in the state with a network of 2,326 agents supported by 25 branches across key cities, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, and Vadodara. DeshGujarat
