IMD Issues Heatwave Warning for Ahmedabad and Several Gujarat Districts

Ahmedabad: Heatwave conditions are expected to persist across several parts of Gujarat over the next four days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting maximum temperatures between 41°C and 45°C in parts of the state.

According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin issued on May 11, dry weather is likely to continue across Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch, Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli till May 18. The department said there is likely to be no major change in maximum temperatures during the next four days, followed by a fall of 2-4°C thereafter.

The weather department has issued heatwave warnings for several districts in North Gujarat, Central Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch. On May 11 and 12, heatwave conditions are very likely at isolated places in Banaskantha, Patan, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Anand, Surat and Vadodara districts. In Saurashtra, Rajkot, Amreli, Dwarka and Botad districts are also expected to witness heatwave conditions, while Surendranagar and Kutch are likely to remain under heatwave conditions during the period.

The warning is expected to continue in parts of Gujarat till May 14, with Ahmedabad among the districts likely to remain affected. The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies for Ahmedabad and neighbouring areas, with the maximum temperature likely to touch 44°C.

During the last 24 hours, heatwave conditions were recorded at isolated pockets in Surat district as well as in Surendranagar, Porbandar, Keshod and Kandla Airport in Saurashtra-Kutch. Kandla Airport recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at 45.2°C. Temperatures remained above normal to markedly above normal in parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra.

The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to heat, stay hydrated and wear lightweight, loose cotton clothing. People have also been advised to cover their heads with cloth, hats or umbrellas while stepping outdoors. Vulnerable groups, including infants, elderly citizens and people suffering from chronic illnesses, have been urged to take extra precautions during the ongoing heatwave spell. DeshGujarat
