Gujarat in Race as Naveen Jindal Group Explores Sites for 18 GW Nuclear Plants

New Delhi: The Naveen Jindal Group is evaluating multiple sites across at least nine states, including Gujarat and Odisha, for the development of large-scale nuclear power projects as part of its long-term energy expansion plans, a news report said.

Under its diversification strategy, the conglomerate plans to develop around 18 GW of nuclear power capacity, involving investments worth several lakh crore rupees. The proposed projects are expected to contribute to the Centre’s target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

It is learnt that the group is also holding discussions with several domestic and international players to explore partnerships for access to nuclear power technologies.

As per the officials familiar with the matter, talks are underway, and the group is actively engaging with multiple state governments. As per the reports, most of the shortlisted locations are in coastal states such as Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, while Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are also under consideration.

The proposed sites are being assessed on several factors, including land availability, water resources, geological and seismic suitability, transmission infrastructure, regulatory preparedness, and long-term project feasibility.

The group plans to install large modular reactors (LMRs) with a capacity of 700 MW or more at these locations.

Citing industry estimates, the official said establishing 1 GW of nuclear power capacity requires an investment of around ₹15,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore, while a project typically takes about three years to move from the planning stage to commissioning. The group is also in discussions with multiple technology providers to source nuclear power technology for its planned projects. DeshGujarat
