FDA(USA)’s country director meets Gujarat Health Minister

The Country Director (India) Food & Drugs Administration, USA Mr. Bruce Ross along with Assistant Directors Ms. Erine Keith and Mr. Dipesh Shah are on official visit of Gujarat State during 28th & 29th July, 2010. Mr. Bruce Ross and his team today, visited Health Minister Shri Jay Narayan Vyas here.

During this visit, this delegation will also interact with local policy makers, regulatory agency (Food & Drugs Control Administration) and stake holders of Medical Devices Industry, NIPER and CDSCO and to discuss various aspects related Medical Devices Industry. And Principal Health Secretary, Commissioner, Food & Drugs Control Administration and stake holders of Medical Devices Industry.

Health Minister Shri Jay Narayan Vyas has briefed the team with the progress of Gujarat State in various field including Pharmaceutical & Medical Devices Industry. Minister said that industrially developed Gujarat is the Growth engine of India.

During visit to the office of FDCA here in Gandhinagar, the delegation was impressed by the work culture developed by FDCA in discharging its duties. Mr. Bruce Ross was impressed with the proactive approach of Government of Gujarat and entrepreneurship in Gujarat State. He expressed optimistic views for development in Gujarat State in the field of medical device and pharmaceutical industry. Shri Hemant Koshia, Commissioner, FDCA has made a detailed presentation on current status and future prospective of medical devices & Pharmaceutical industry in Gujarat State.

The meetings were very fruitful and exchanges of ideas and information will be mutually beneficial to open new doors to export of medical devices manufactured in Gujarat State to USA and other developed countries, leader of the delegation hoped.

Food & Drug Administration USA is the regulatory agency for manufacture, distribution and import of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and food products into USA. US FDA is the leading regulatory agency in the world and has provided a major contribution in the concept of cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. US FDA inspects and approves the manufacturing sites for import of certain products into USA. Till date 29 Pharmaceutical manufacturing units of Gujarat State have been approved by US FDA & they are exporting various pharmaceuticals in USA and other developed countries. Considering the potential of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry, US FDA has recently set up their office at New Delhi and Mumbai.
