Veraval elects local group ‘Jan Jagruti Manch’ to power
Veraval, 23 October, 2010
Saurashtra’s Veraval town has created history in Municipality election result today. The town has elected local group of Kharva community to Municipality.
Local group of Bar Gam Kharva Samaj under the banner of Jan Jagruti Manch contested the election independently on 31 seats, distancing BJP and Congress both.
Jan Jagruti Manch has now secured victory over the local body.
Veraval has 14 wards and 42 seats. Candidates on seven seats were declared uncontested winner(Congress – 6 , Samajwadi Party -1). The election was therefore held for 35 seats.
The people of Veraval were not happy with their corprators during last five years. In 2005 election, BJP had secured 29s eats, while Congress 13 seats. For first 2.5 years, Lohana woman Kiranben was President of local body, however she could not get enough cooperation from BJP corporators. In next two and half years, Koshorbhai Kuhada became Mayor, even though the fact that he was not corporator. Kuhada sought resignation of his close aid, and contested election to win and rule the local body.
After some Congress members supported the ruling BJP, there were hardly five to seven Congress corporators left in Veraval.
Veraval witnessed misrule during BJP regime in last five years. Roads were in poor condition, cleanliness was a dream, non-filtered water supply, lacking of city bus service, poor condition of city hospital, the problems were plenty.
