Rajkot, 23 December, 2010
Travel between coastal Saurashtra’s Porbandar and Somnath will be possible through railway early next year.
Gauge conversion work of Porbandar-Vansjaliya-Jetalsar route has been completed, and a goods train was recently put on this track for testing purpose.
Distance between Porbandar and Somnath is 120 kms, and traveling by road on coastal Saurashtra highway is the only option to travel this distance. Due to proximity to Arabian sea, this road remains in poor condition most of the time during year.
According to sources in Western Railway, works for Rs. 319 crore Vansjaliya-Jetalsar 90 kms broad gauge has been completed and a new passanger train is likely to be launched on 26th of January next year on Porbandar-Junagadh-Jetalsar-Somnath route.
The new railway line will be good for Bhayavadar, Upleta, Moti Paneli, Dhoraji etc. places that are known for onion and other agricultural products. It is projected that good platform of Upleta and Bhayavadar will be instrumental in transportation of agricultural goods from this area to the other parts of the country.
