Curiosity over possible result of Khadia assembly by-poll has gripped everyone in Gujarat who is even little bit interested in politics.
Thanks to good number of Muslim voters, Congress party is expecting victory in Khadia. Congress of course tried its best to woo Hindu voters also by roping in all major state level leaders.
Khadia is located in Amdavad’s historical wall city area.
Once upon a time, wall city area had Hindu majority population. Till last decade, assembly areas like Kalupur and Shahpur could elect Hindu BJP MLA. However due to continuous migration of Hindus from wall city areas to the west side of the city, now Kalupur and Shahpur elect only Muslim Congress candidates to assembly. This happened in last assembly election here. While electing Muslim candidate is not wrong, here is the story of continuous migration of Hindus from wall city area, and changing political dimensions due to that.
In entire wall city Ahmedabad, only Khadia has remained a Hindu majority pocket, but that too only till now.
Next year, in December 2012 general assembly elections, Khadia will be merged with Jamalpur as per the new delimitation report. This will clearly make Khadia-Jamalpur assembly seat a Muslim majority seat.
Even if Bhushan Bhatt is elected, he will most likely enjoy power for less than two years of time. And then, it is almost sure that Muslim MLA will rule Khadia-Raipur. So the people of Khadia will have to forget Ashok Bhatt’s house as centre point of their solutions, and they will have to go to Jamalpur.
It seems in 2012 general assembly election, Ahmed Shah’s 15th century wall city Ahmedabad will become Ahmed Patel’s wall city of Ahmedabad. This is because, Ahmed Patel is a person who okays Muslims candidates of Congress so far as Gujarat is concerned.
But the question is: why Hindus migrated from wall city area?
They migrated to get more space, good schools, proximity to colleges etc. They migrated due to continuous attacks during communal clashes, they migrated because elite class Hindus of western part of Amdavad would not give bride to groom who resides in wall city area. These are some of the reasons for which government and society both are responsible.
Another question is that, what did the government do to prevent this migration?
Well, the government made a law preventing inter community property transfer in sensitive areas. But this law has just remained on paper. First the Muslim builders and goons overtook this law through power of attorney documents, and now they do it by bribing the collector officer people. One recent such incident of property transfer through illegal means in sensitive area of western Amdavad has reached court.
