Gandhinagar, 18 March, 2011

A few thousand Mahuva farmers agitating against proposed Nirma cement plant continued to camp at Gandhinagar’s Pathikashram ground. The farmers ended their 350-km long foot march yesterday in Gandhinagar, and a delegation met Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Modi offered them buses to go back to Mahuva, however the farmers decided to stay in Gandhinagar for a night and one more day to asses the post-Supreme court judgment mode of agitation. While male farmers stayed inside the camp, the women and children foot marchers attempted to gherao the assembly campus in the morning. The state government had asked the police force to show restrain from using strength against the marchers if they come forward to gherao the assembly building. The marchers were stopped near Pathikashram without any significant confrontation and minor use of force. According to sources, Kalsaria was not in favor of confrontation, but some Socialist/leftist NGOs who have joined his movement lately put forward an idea of women and children march and conducted it.
