Gujarat assembly today unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the centre should announce total ban on selling, distribution and reproduction of a controversial book on Mahatma Gandhi written by Pulitzer prize-wining author Joseph Lelyveld. Bringing this resolution to house, Chief Minister Narendra Modi demanded that the Centre take legal action to stop publication of a controversial book. The Chief Minister announced total ban on this book in Gujarat. This was supported by opposition Congress party.

“I strongly condemn the contents of a new book on Mahatma Gandhi in which there is perversion of views. Gandhiji had preached to the world truth and non-violence and to write about him in such a manner is in very bad taste. The Central Government should take legal action against publication of this book. The book should be banned across the country,” he said.

The book, Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India, published in the US by Knopf – part of Random House Inc – is not available in India so far but it is available in the United States since yesterday. The reviews of the book hit the newspapers in England and US claiming that the book says Gandhi was a bisexual and had a German-Jewish bodybuilder lover in Hermann Kallenbach.
