Kutch complaining about Surendranagar's Narmada water theft

Thanks to illegal canal water lifting menace resurfacing in Saurashtra’s Surendranagar district, the people of Kutch are getting lesser amount of Narmada water. This has also impacted water supply in district headquarter Bhuj where water is supplied now once in two-four days.

Bhuj town needs 18 mld water per day in summer. While 28 borewell supply 10 mld water, the rest of the water has to be supplied by Narmada canal. However due to water lifting menace in Surendranagar district’s Halvad area, Bhuj has not received Narmada water for last eight days because of which there’s shortage of about 6 mld water per day in Bhuj according to local Municipality President Narendra Thakkar.

According to Thakkar, the Municipality has requested state ministers Shri Nitinbhai Patel and Vasanbhai Ahir for strict action against those farmers of Dhanki area of Surendranagar district who steal water.

Last year the state government had deployed State Reserve Police on Narmada canal in Halvad/Dhanki belt to control water lifting menace.

The state government has given assurance to Kutch that similar actions will be taken this year to prevent water lifting in Surendranagar district.
