Why as citizens we are like this only?

Why are we like this only?

To run lights through Solar power, poles with solar panel on top, light and battery were erected between Koba circle and Bhat village circle on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar main road(avoiding using the word- highway). And now we are getting the news that 45 batteries worth Rs 1,80,000 are stolen from these poles! A police complaint has been filed in this case.

Ahmedabad’s Ellis bridge had wonderful and artistic poles on its curves. When the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation constructed two new lanes on both sides of the old bridge(to keep it as heritage structure), they recreated the artistic poles, however one-by-one almost all poles were stolen. The AMC had to pull out remaining poles to prevent further theft. That remaining poles are now lying in the storeroom of the AMC.

Some time back beautiful artifacts of decades-old Chabutara near one of the bridges in Ahmedabad were carved out and stolen. Nobody has any answer that where those beautiful stolen sculptures are.

There’s one under-bridge near Daxini crossing in Maninagar area of Ahmedabad. The AMC would put lights inside the undebridge and soon in one-two or three days the lights would be stolen. This has happened for number of times, and sometimes AMC gets too frustrated that it doesn’t re-erect the lights till the time complains are received again.

When our people go to Europe, they admire public sculpture and well maintained public properties. But here on our land, discipline is lacking. Last year on one evening I saw two youths sitting on the shoulder of Induchcha’s statue in minority dominated Lal Darwaja area. One youth had cigarette in his hand and the other guy had gas lighter in his hand. While one friend had put cigarette on Induchcha’s lips, the other guy was lighting it. The third guy was standing in front of the statue on the ground and was clicking a photograph. Not only this but the boundary of a small garden around Induchaha’s statue was used for drying the cloths by the people living illegally in slums just on the other side of the road. The AMC had to raise the height of the boundary and had to sharpen its top to prevent the people using it as stand to dry their cloths.

When I discussed this Induchacha statue issue with my Muslim friend , he said his religion doesn’t believe in statue, and the statues in Muslim area are likely to be treated like this disregarding the fact, whose statue it is. I was shocked to listen to this frank but completely crazy kind of thing.

So now, can somebody please also start a religion called disciplined and honest citizenship?

The wider question is same with which I started this note: Why are we like this only?
