GPCB slaps closure notice to Kribhco plant
Rajkot, 5 July, 2011
Central government’s urea manufacturing plant, Kribhco at Hazira has been slapped closure notice by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).
Nearly 10 days ago Urea-2 unit of the plant had released water with harmful chemicals. The buffaloes who were glazing nearby died after drinking it. When the officials at Kribhco became of aware of this problem they disposed of the dead bodies of the buffaloes. They took the help of the villagers by burying the dead bodies in open fields nearby. They also settled the problems with the owners of the buffaloes.
When the GPCB came to know about this incident, a team of GPCB visited the plant, but the officials at Kribhco refused to cooperate. They refused to answer upon being asked that how did the polluted water got out of the plant and why any steps were not taken to stop the water. But the Officials of GPCB were strong headed to get to the roots of the problem. After an extensive search for 2 days they noticed that in the nearby open ground, body parts of an animal like horns, tail and legs were visible. After an excavation by a JCB machine was done, it was discovered that 12 dead bodies of buffaloes were buried in this field.
GPCB was given strict orders from Gandhinagar to treat this matter seriously. Only one week ago Kribhco was given a closure notice and the company supplying electricity to the plant was also notified to shutdown the power supply.
Adding to this the chairman of GPCB ,K.U Mistry said that this incident is very serious, despite of the central government undertaking this company, the evidence was destroyed and the officials at Kribhco also refused to cooperate. Such things cannot go unseen. Hence without coming under any influence the plant was given a closure.
