Ahmedabad, 24 November, 2011
About 400 junior doctors of Ahmedabad’s civic authority run hospitals today stayed away from duty protesting against yesterday’s incident of attack on doctors in city’s V.S.hospital.
Junior doctors of city’s V.S., Shardaben, L.G. and Nagri hospital went on strike today morning without prior announcement.
They were demanding written assurance for proper security and protection while doing duty. They said if their demand was not accepted within 24 hours, the strike could spread further to other government hospitals.
Yesterday one Narmadaben died in V.S. hospital allegedly due to removal of ventilator by doctors. Relatives of Narmadaben started beating the doctors and created chaos in the hospital. They claimed they had proof of belonging to below poverty line class, but they were asked to pay money to stay on ventilator.
Doctors claimed that Narmadaben was critical when she was brought to the hospital from a private facility, and behavior of her relatives was violent.
The AMC is with doctors on this issue and has asked hospital authority to file police complaint against those who attacked doctors yesterday.
