Gujarat has six medical colleges at present. In last two years, the state government has selected five district hospitals and sought their upgrade to start new medical colleges there. The state government has sent proposal to centre in this regard. The district hospitals for which upgradation has been sought are located at Palanpur, Nadiad, Amreli, Godhra and Vyara. This detail was shared by Health Minister today in ongoing Gujarat Assembly Budget session during in reply to a question.
It should be pointed out that new medical colleges will immensely help government which is presently not able to find enough doctors who can offer their services in rural parts of Gujarat. Say for example, a small Babra town in Saurashtra region is today observing bandh to protest shortage of doctors in government facility. While government continuously host recruitment exercise to provide doctors for such facilities, the fact is that doctors are not ready to go to rural areas, and there’s shortage therefore. If more medical hospitals are opened in districts, more local students will get admission and scenario will somewhat change. It’s very costly to start and operate a medical college, and therefore government’s move to propose five new colleges is important.
